Practice

Leonard is a partner in the accounting firm Dermody, Burke & Brown, CPAs, LLC. In the last 23 years he has prepared business valuation reports for estate tax and gift tax returns, divorce litigation and dissenting shareholder disputes. He currently devotes approximately three quarters of his practice toward the business valuation and litigation support for matrimonial matters. He has been repeatedly selected as an independent valuator or consultant in the divorce mediation process and as an "agreed" valuator in litigated matrimonial disputes.

Leonard has been retained in approximately 300 valuation matters for closely held businesses, professional practices or professional licenses. In litigation instances, the majority of matters were settled prior to trial or at the courthouse before the trial formally convened with his valuation conclusion utilized in settlement negotiations.

He has rendered testimony in litigated matters both in Supreme Court and Family Court and has been accepted as an expert witness by various local judges. Leonard is often retained by property and casualty insurance companies to assist their adjusters and claims specialists to ascertain the loss suffered by the claimant due to employee dishonesty and business interruptions.

Professional and Community Involvement

Leonard is a member of the CNY Collaborative Family Law Professionals, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts. He has lectured for both the New York State and Onondaga County Bar Associations and presented lectures for the New York State Council on Divorce Mediation and the National Business Institute.
